Mobility Safety

Rice University's Mobility Safety Committee

Over the past decade, both the population of the Rice University campus and the square footage of campus facilities have increased notably. At the same time, there have been community-wide changes in travel trends, with cycling gaining popularity among students and employees as an option for commuting to and from the Rice campus, and bikes, longboards and hoverboards becoming increasingly common for student travel around the campus.

Because more people moving via a wider variety of travel modes across increasingly constricted and congested spaces can result in unsafe situations, including the possibility of significant injuries, in the fall of 2017, Rice University launched a Mobility Safety Committee (MSC) comprised of representatives of campus departments and student organizations. The charge of the committee was to consider the breadth of campus mobility issues across all modes of travel, from “heels to wheels,” and to make recommendations for the safe movement of people – whether on foot, or by bike, bus, car, skateboard, cart, etc. – both on the Rice campus and on campus perimeter streets.
